Lilac - Katherine Havemeyer
Katherine Havemeyer Lilac, Syringa vulgaris 'Katherine Havemeyer', is an early blooming French Hybrid that produces abundant clusters of double, lavender-pink, fragrant flowers among dark green, disease resistant foliage. It is a leggy, suckering, deciduous shrub, somewhat irregular in shape. It is a strong, long lived, popular shrub that is easily grown in a neutral soil, with peat or leaf mold enrichment, and it prefers full sun. Katherine Havemeyer Lilac tolerates light shade, but best bloom is in full sun. It grows 10-12 feet tall and 8-10 feet wide which makes a very colorful border or screen. Very well branched head with lots of fragrant blooms, this pretty, spreading lilac makes an excellent backdrop for a shrub border. Privet - Chinese South The Chinese South Privet, Ligustrum sinense, is an abundant semi-evergreen small tree or large shrub, most commonly found invading the understory of moist areas. Copious amounts of fruits are produced. The berries turn black when ripe and are gobbled up by birds, which spread the seeds far and wide. The foilage is sometimes so thick that nothing can grow underneath the shrub. It usually reaches a height of 15 feet and has pretty white flowers in the late spring. Its oval leaves are dark green.
