To Build or Buy a Garden Shed

September 28th, 2008 by Todd Sams

There is nothing sweeter than having all of your lawn and garden tools and equipment in one place, easily assessable when you need them and locked up tight when you don’t. It’s also great to have them stored somewhere other than your garage or basement to have that extra security buffer just in case someone else wants your lawnmower.

Making an investment in a garden shed that is large enough to house all of your lawn and garden equipment will give you great peace of mind as you remove any dangerous material from your home. This can also serve as additional space for hobbies such as wood-working or greenhouses and gardening.

You can also build your own shed if you feel this is something you are qualified to do. With good instructions, cut list and materials list it is actually easier than you think. When building your own you get to choose from a variety of plans available as well as styles and sizes.

Building your own shed lets you bring in your personality and style with color and design. It’s also a great way to add water and power for your other hobbies as well. There is great fun in doing a project like a garden shed.

Safety is one of those things we sometimes think about after the project is over. There are two primary areas of concern you will want to look at with any shed you decide on whether built or bought. One is your physical safety with loading and unloading your equipment. Building a ramp is a great way to minimize that risk. The other is the security of the doors and window and the perimeter of the shed. Make sure you use good sturdy locks for any entrance area and install a security light on the exterior.

On the inside of the garden shed you have numerous choices to make as to types of shelving, hooks and other hanging essentials for bikes, canoes, backpacks, etc. It is beneficial to include a wall of pegboard to hang basic tools and garden items for quick access as well as incorporating some small bins for nails, screws and other home project basics. You will discover that there’s nothing like a garden shed!
