More Great Lawn And Landscape Tips For Homeowners

March 30th, 2009 by admin

Buying a house is a big deal, but taking care of it and keeping it nicer is even greater. And to me, the greatest part of your investment is the lawn and landscape. If you think about, they are the only things that are actually “alive” at your home. With that in mind, here are some great do-it-yourself tips for your lawn and ornamental plants.

Mow The Right Way

I can’t tell you how many lawns I have seen that could be thick, green and beautiful if they were just cut properly. Lawn mowing involves two easy to remember elements.

1)Mow every week and never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single cutting. In other words, mow tall!

2)Sharpen the mower blade at least twice per year. A dull mower blade shreds the grass and causes it to turn brown

It doesn’t really matter if you mulch or catch as long as you follow the two tips above. If you decide to call a professional lawn care service, make sure they are doing these same things as well.

Fertilize The Lawn Correctly

Lawn treatments are not complicated but they are very important. Proper fertilization and weed control are essential to a healthy green lawn. Be sure to apply nitrogen in the early spring for a nice green up, and periodically through the year to maintain color and vigor. You should also knock out the weeds using liquid spot spraying that you mix in a pump up sprayer. If you think about it, lawn care is really quite simple.

In addition, you may want to consider applying a fungus treatment in the later spring, as well as a grub worm insect preventative treatment in the early summer. These will put the icing on your lawn cake for the season!

Landscape Maintenance

The final piece of our outside maintenance puzzle involves your landscape trees, shrub and ornamentals. It is obvious they need to be pruned, but have you ever though about spraying them for bugs or fungus? This is something that your local landscaping services company should be doing for you. If you don’t know who to call, you should start with one of the larger, better known landscaping services like TruGreen because they have the knowledge to get the job done on time and consistently.

If you will make sure to give priority to these 3 areas this year, you will surely be increasing the value of you home and your investment. Get out today and start planning, you won’t be sorry.
