DIY Lawn Care Basics

January 27th, 2009 by Stephen Freelander

Think about this: the winter is almost over and that means the grass will be turning green and the dandelions are gonna blow up. You need a plan.

I have to figure that most of you are going to wait until the last minute to figure out what you are going to do with the grass this season. But you need to be ready to get out and put down the lawn treatments to make the lawn grow properly and keep out the nasty weeds. These tips should help you start your plan of action for this year.

The first thing I want you to think of when it comes to lawn care and treatments is the fertilizer you will be spreading. We need something that will give the lawn some green color as well as strengthen the root system. With that in mind, you want some nitrogen in the mix, but not too much. Be sure to get something with some other elements like potassium included.

It is also a good idea to apply organic fertilizers in the hot summer to avoid burning. You will find that organics also release nutrients slowly, feeding the lawn over time and not all in once quick burst.

After we have chosen out fertilizer, we need to figure out how we are going to eliminate the impending weed infestation. Now, I really don’t want you guys to use over the counter weed and feed products like you can get at the home improvement stores. These are completely bad for the environment because spreading them just slings the weed killing chemicals everywhere. We need something with more control.

Always use liquid weed control and spot spray or target the weeds where they are and no where else.

Finally come the finishing touches. You will need some sort of insect control and probably a fungus treatment for the later spring. I’d also recommend you get some type of product that contains an iron additive as that will turn your lawn dark blue, giving you the edge you are looking for!

So if you are reading this at the last minute, and you are about to go nuts because the weeds are invading your brown lawn, get out this weekend and get started. You’ll be surprised how fast your lawn will respond.
