Adding A Pond To Your Backyard – Instant Appeal
For an immediate focal point to your backyard, think about building a pond. For example Ontario owners of Ajax real estate may call the local utilities such as Enbridge or Ontario Hyro. What better way to relax than sitting by a water feature and listening to water. Here are a few suggestions to help you create a perfect pond that will become the landmark of your garden.
The first step you should do is to contact your municipality to ensure that there are no gas or electric lines running underneath the area you have chosen for your pond. Try to stay clear of older trees that will have imposing root systems. For everyone’s enjoyment, select a location that can be seen from most of the yard. For a more intimate retreat, tuck away your pond in a hidden area and landscape it profusely.
Establish the contour of your pond with a string. If you are employing a pre-formed pond the selection will be restricted. However, if you are working with a liner, you are only restricted by your imagination. Be mindful to dig the plant terrace the exact size as what is in your pre-formed liner or about one foot wide and eight inches down if working with a liner. Now would be a good time to double check that the pond’s edges are balanced. If your power source is not close to the pond, you should excavate a shallow trench in which you will deposit the PVC pipe that will hold the electric cord.
Line the base of the pond with one inch of sand. The terraced shelves should also be coated by sand. If using a pre-formed pond, place it in the hole. Otherwise, commence placing down the liner. To avoid any problems, cut the liner four feet wider and longer than the actual pond. Flatten out any folds by pushing the liner down.
You may now start to fill the pond. As the pond fills, backfill the extra space around your pre-formed pond and try to time it so that you are finished at about the same time the pond is filled. In the case of a liner, remember to keep pulling the liner taunt. Install your pump at the bottom of the pond and hide the cord.
Dressing up your pond should be great fun. Begin by laying down flat rocks on the border of your pond and stagger a second layer for a realistic look. Overhang the rocks a bit over the water. Place the cord for your pump in between rocks and camouflage it with a third flat rock.
Landscaping around your water feature should not be hurried. Is your objective to have the pond fit with the rest of the backyard or do you wish it to be highly visible? You should maintain at least one side clear of vegetation to keep it accessible. Designing a feature on one side and one end while leaving the rest of the pond clear is a popular landscaping option. When choosing plants, remember to select ones that will do well in a wet environment. In and around an Ajax homes in Ontario will often have differences in temperature with tough winters and hot, humid summers so take your region’s climate into account.
Now is the time to enjoy your hard work. In most cases, ponds may be one weekend affairs. So go do it. Everyone will want a pond once they see how good yours looks.
